BURLESQUE
American burlesque is a genre of variety entertainment, adapted to the United States in the 19th century. Derived from elements of Victorian burlesque, music hall, and minstrel shows, American shows became popular in the late 1860s and slowly evolved to feature bawdy comedy and female nudity. By the early 1930s, the striptease element of burlesque eclipsed comedy and subjected burlesque to extensive local legislation. Burlesque gradually declined in popularity from the 1940s onward. A number of producers sought to capitalize on the nostalgia for the entertainment by attempting to recreate the spirit of burlesque in Hollywood films from the 1930s to the 1960s. Since the 1990s, the format has seen a resurgence in interest with New Burlesque or Neo Burlesque.
